How do artists decide on prices for their work?
Artists base their prices mostly on the price of the canvas and supplies plus the amount of hours and effort that goes into their work.
Having said that, every artist knows that prices have to also be based on the market. The market prices are based on the value of the artwork according to the amount of experience (years of experience as a professional) and recognition (high demand in sales from the public for a recognizable, developed style) that an artist has acquired over their career. The market also has a value set according to the demand of the general public based on quality. In the case of commission artists that work through galleries as well as independent artists charge a lot more for the sketches, research, creativity and extra time that require take in count the clients input.
How do I price my artwork?
My prices are usually under or in the case of commissions follow the general market prices based on the quality of my work (material: canvas, paint, etc.) and based on over a decade of experience as a professional (craft skills). My prices are consistent with the amount of effort and the cost of materials that goes into creating the work, but I also consider that a commission takes more time to make and follows a different process involving the client directly.
